El Paso and its Colorado Interstate Gas Co. unit received the civil penalty after an investigation into a 2006 pipeline explosion that killed a construction worker in Laramie, Wyoming. The Transportation Department determined that El Paso hadn’t followed regulations for locating and marking buried pipelines.

When manufactured wood I-joists are used in place of dimensional lumber joists in wood-frame construction, they must be supported properly so that they will not collapse under normal conditions. Photo 1 shows the most common method used to support I-joists from wood beams. The I-joists are set in galvanized steel joist hangers that are nailed to both the beam and the I-joists, with the tops of the I-joists flush with the tops of the wood beams. All of the nail holes in the joist hanger provided by the manufacturer must have nails to achieve the design strength of the system. The most common defect in I-joist assemblies is missing nails, which can significantly weaken the assembly and is often concealed by the floor deck above and a gypsum board ceiling below.

The Health and Safety Executive that a new statutory crane register will be introduced in April 2010. The decision to introduce a statutory tower crane register was made at the HSE’s Board Meeting held last week.

A tragic accident and a reminder of the dangers of power lines. In this case the victim was electrocuted via an intermediate object. One of Northern Ireland’s biggest construction firms has been fined £60,000 following the death of a sub-contractor. Northstone (NI), a top 100 company, was fined for three breaches of health and safety at Dungannon Crown Court in a case brought by the Health |and Safety Executive for Northern Ireland (HSENI).
