Nuclear Power Expansion in China Stirs Concerns
Wednesday, 16 December 2009 10:34
China is preparing to build three times as many nuclear power plants in the coming decade as the rest of the world combined, a breakneck pace with the potential to help slow global warming.
China’s civilian nuclear power industry — with 11 reactors operating and construction starting on as many as an additional 10 each year — is not known to have had a serious accident in 15 years of large-scale electricity production.

Going vertical: Fleeing tsunamis by moving up, not out
Tuesday, 15 December 2009 10:39
In the minutes after a strong earthquake struck offshore of the Indonesian city of Padang on Sept. 30, fears of a tsunami prompted hundreds of thousands of residents to evacuate the coastal city. Or try to.
The traffic jam resulting from the mass exodus kept most of them squarely in the danger zone, had a tsunami followed the magnitude 7.6 temblor. Stanford researchers who've studied the city have concluded that fleeing residents would have a better chance of surviving a tsunami if instead of all attempting an evacuation, some could run to the nearest tall building to ride out the wave.
It's called "vertical evacuation" and could save thousands of lives, but only if the city's buildings are reinforced to withstand both earthquakes and tsunamis.

USA-New York Tightens Construction Safety Standards, Bars Building Demolition During Asbestos Removal
Thursday, 10 December 2009 10:33
New York Mayor Michael Bloomberg signed legislation this week that prohibits simultaneous demolition and asbestos removal activities in the same building.

The measure is aimed to improve construction safety standards. It’s the last of a dozen pieces of legislation crafted in response to the fatal August 2007 fire at the former Deutsche Bank building that killed two firefighters.

“The possibility of a dangerous—even life threatening—situation is increased when demolition work is combined with asbestos abatement activities,” Mayor Bloomberg said in a press release.
