A Newsnight investigation suggests that UK government plans to build a new generation of nuclear power stations to fill the energy gap by 2020 are wildly optimistic. The British nuclear regulator has told Newsnight that he would not hesitate to halt construction if problems emerged and that no British nuclear power station had ever been built on time.

When a glass is shattered it normally breaks into pieces, but a laminated glass does not due to the presence of polyvinyl butyral between the two layers of the glass. Strong impacts at times are unable to penetrate the laminated glass and hence its strength saves it from being broken into several sharp pieces. A newly established world record run at the Three Mile Island reactor in Pennsylvania is the most recent in a series of achievements that demonstrate the world-class reliability and safety of U.S. nuclear energy facilities.
Ceasing electricity production for refueling on Oct. 26 after 705 days of continuous operation, TMI-1 is the first pressurized water reactor (PWR) power plant in the world to eclipse the 700-day mark for continuous operation.
